A group of teenagers and over 100 protesters staged a “lie-in” outside the White House on President's Day to pressure lawmakers on gun control and reform.

CNN reports, “The group, dubbed Teens for Gun Reform, had started organizing the event by seeking 17 demonstrators to lie down for three minutes to symbolize how long it took for Nikolas Cruz to gun down 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida last week.”

What started as a small protest by teenagers Eleanor Nuechterlein and Whitney Bowen and 17 of friends turned into a large-scale demonstration when word began to spread across social media. Over 100 people ultimately attended the event, including Virginia Rep. Don Beyer, a gun control advocate.

In an ABC-Washington Post poll released yesterday, 77% of respondents said they think more effective mental health screening and treatment could have prevented the Parkland, Fla. shooting.

Racist Snapchat Message Sparks Protests, Calls for Campus Officials to Resign

A Snapchat message posted by a student from SUNY Plattsburgh that referenced lynching African Americans led to a protest march and a campus forum in which members of the Black Student Union and Student Association called for the resignation of top campus officials.

Student groups met yesterday with officials from the State University of New York (SUNY), but remain outraged that no disciplinary action has been taken against the student and previous racist incidents have also gone unpunished.

'Cold War' Scale Military Build Up in the Black Sea

On Saturday, the U.S. doubled its Navy warship presence in the Black Sea, deploying the USS Carney to the region. This increase is an effort to counter Russian naval presence there, according to experts.

On Sunday, the Russian presence increased further, with the additions of the Russian frigate Admiral Essen, and two patrol ships. The news came in a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

"In the Cold War we had a dance we did and everybody knew their roles in the dance: You fly your bomber here, I'll fly my bomber there. You put a ship here, I'll put a ship there," a US defense official in Europe told CNN.

Last But Not Least: College Professors Proclaim Trump the Worst President in History

Professors Brandon Rottinghaus (University of Houston) and Justin Vaughn (Boise State University) conducted a survey of 170 members of the American Political Science Association’s Presidents and Executive Politics section and came to conclusion that Donald Trump is the worst president in American history. The results were published in the New York Times yesterday.

According to Rottinghaus and Vaughn, "Since our previous survey in 2014, some presidential legacies have soared (Barack Obama’s stock has climbed into the Top 10), while others have fallen (Andrew Jackson toppled to 15, out of the Top 10)."
