Amy Schumer’s New Movie Faces Body Shaming Backlash

“I Feel Pretty” receives some ugly comments.

Amy Schumer’s most recent on-screen performance, I Feel Pretty, is the subject of criticism by some viewers. The movie, which was released this past weekend, follows Schumer as a woman named Renee who struggles with low self-esteem. Renee then hits her head and suddenly perceives herself as beautiful. Schumer says that the message behind the movie is that, no matter what Renee looks like, she learns to love herself and it empowers her in different aspects of her life.

However, there are some viewers who have come out to say that the movie promotes body shaming. Schumer says that there were no intentions for anyone to feel that there were body shaming motives behind I Feel Pretty.

Schumer told Vulture, “There’s been a lot of projection. I heard a lot of, ‘She doesn’t have a right to feel bad about herself because she looks however she looks.’ But first off, it’s not about an ugly troll becoming beautiful, it’s about a woman who has low self-esteem finding some. Everyone’s got a right to feel that feeling, regardless of their appearance. We all struggle with self-esteem. I certainly have. Your friends who you think are so beautiful, they could be struggling too. You want them to see themselves the way you see them, but it’s not our place to say who should be allowed to have low self-esteem.”

Regardless of the comments that she has received on the film, Schumer believes that it doesn’t matter if a movie is controversial or not — people always find something.
