14 Year Old Suspect in Custody After Reports of California High School Shooting

Authorities believe that this seems to be an isolated shooting incident

A 14-year-old male student was apprehended by local authorities Friday morning following reports of a shooting at a high school in Palmdale, California that left one individual injured with a gunshot wound to the arm.

CNN reports that the incident occurred approximately around 7 am PT, even as several students were still entering the school compound. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Twitter account, police deputies arrived onsite at Highland High School “within 5 minutes of the multiple calls” they received about an active shooter on campus.

NBC Los Angeles reports that the entire high school was immediately “placed on lockdown during a tense law enforcement sweep,” with students and faculty members expressing their initial concerns of a potential mass-shooting scenario. Three nearby elementary schools-  David G. Millen Intermediate, Cottonwood Elementary and Ocotillo Elementary- were also under a precautionary lockdown, as reported by CNN

At around 10:20 am PT, Highland High School principal Chris Grado informed parents and guardians on Twitter that officials had lifted the lockdown and will allow parents and guardians through individually to receive their children.

The identities of the shooter and the victim, both aged 14, have not been disclosed to the public. Both individuals are said to be attending the high school. The victim wound has been determined as non-life-threatening and since been admitted to a local hospital where he is expected to recover fully.

The shooter was detained off campus by officers, at a Vons grocery store, near the school’s premises, as reported by CNN. The LA County Sheriff Department tweeted that the Palmdale high school shooting appears to be an isolated shooting and that the weapon, a rifle, has been successfully procured by authorities off campus.

As at 12:00 pm PT, Local authorities are still conducting an active investigation of the campus and its surrounding premises.

According to CNN, this is the 21st school shooting in the United States this year. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is expected to hold a press conference at 3 pm PT Friday.
