The big story…

North Carolina Lawyer Wins Miss USA Contest

This year’s Miss USA is Cheslie Krist, a 27-year-old lawyer from North Carolina who does pro bono work for prison inmates. Krist, an African American woman and an accomplished lawyer, is just one of the many diverse candidates who appeared in this year’s pageant, showing that Miss USA is not just about the swimsuit competition anymore.

Student Claims Trump Backers Pushed Him to Accuse Buttigieg of Assault

A college student from Michigan, Hunter Kelly, is claiming that pro-Trump activists Jacob Wohl and Jack Brukman asked him to falsely accuse presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg of rape. Kelly, a Trump supporter, also claims that this smear of Buttigieg was published without his consent. This scheme shows a glimpse into political disinformation in the #MeToo era, and may not be the last time we hear of a situation like this.

In film…

R.I.P. Chewbacca

The actor Peter Mayhew best known for playing Chewbacca in the original Star Wars series has died at the age of 74. Though he never spoke a line, Chewbacca easily became one of the most iconic and beloved characters of the trilogy.

Extremist Leaders Banned from Facebook

In an effort to combat hate speech on the platform, Facebook has banned several extremist leaders such as Alex Jones of Infowars, Louis Farrakhan leader of the Nation of Islam, and Milo Yiannopoulos. The social network has previously invoked temporary bans on certain members of this list, but the bans announced yesterday are permanent as a part of the platform’s initiative to remove violent speech from the site.
