Student Shoots and Kills Parents in Central Michigan University Dorm

James Eric Davis Jr.’s parents arrived at the dorm to pick him up for spring break this morning.

Michigan State Police are confirming that a student at Central Michigan University shot and killed his parents this morning in a residence hall at the school.

The suspect apparently fled the campus, which was locked down until mid-afternoon, when officers began clearing buildings and allowing students to leave. Many had already left the campus for spring break or were preparing for final classes before the break.

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the student, who police have identified as James Eric Davis, Jr, was a sophomore at the university. Sources told the Free Press that Davis’ parents went to campus Friday morning to pick him up for spring break and were shot and killed.

MLive reports that the suspect had an encounter with police Thursday night and was taken to a local hospital:

Lt. Larry Klaus, with the CMU Police Department, said at a press conference that police on Thursday, made contact with James Eric Davis Jr. with what was believed to be a drug overdose or a reaction to drugs. Davis, who is suspected to have shot and killed two people inside Campbell Hall Friday morning, was taken to McLaren Hospital and turned over to staff there. He was released from the hospital Friday morning.

CMU has about 20,000 students and the campus is about two hours north of Detroit in Mount Pleasant, MI:
