The big story…
NASA announced Wednesday that the Opportunity rover sent to Mars 15 years ago is no longer responding, marking the end of its mission. CNN reports, “The agency held a news conference to detail the results of recovery efforts since a dust storm encircled Mars last year. ‘For more than a decade, Opportunity has been an icon in the field of planetary exploration, teaching us about Mars’ ancient past as a wet, potentially habitable planet and revealing uncharted Martian landscapes,’ said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.” Opportunity hasn’t responded to engineers since June 10. Due to dust blocking sunlight, the solar-powered rover has been unable to recharge. Engineers have attempted to revive Opportunity, sending repair commands, but the rover never responded.
Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency Brock Long announced yesterday his plans to step down, ending his two-year tenure with the organization. Brock was the subject of controversy a few months ago after it was found that he used government vehicles and personnel to drive between his home and FEMA headquarters.
